On February 4th, 2022, our dear friend and mentor, Ashley Bryan passed away. As an artist, author, and storyteller, Ashley’s contribution to American art and literature was monumental. Throughout his entire career, his passion for amplifying the legacy of African and African American legacy knew no bounds. It was that same passion that inspired Indigo Arts Alliance to create The Beautiful Blackbird Children’s Book Festival, honoring Ashley’s legacy of uplifting the roots, identity and resiliency within the Black Diaspora. We will truly miss the light that Ashley Bryan shone on this world, but he has surely found peace amongst the ancestors.

“This year feels like the first year we’re celebrating without Ashley with us, but his spirit is still present in all that we do, and we will continue to celebrate his legacy and share the joy of storytelling and creation.”

—Daniel Minter, Co-Founder, Indigo Arts Alliance, 2023
